So what exactly is creativity? Is it an emotion? A talent? A state of mind? It can be hard to describe what creativity really is without an exact definition. Creativity, without looking it up in a dictionary, could probably be explained as expressing an idea in a unique and personal way. But what exactly does this mean? It varies from person to person.
Where does creativity come from? It may come from somewhere in the mind or the heart. Creativity from the mind requires a bit of thinking. When developing an idea creatively, sometimes it takes knowing exactly what to do. When you put thought into creations, this allows one to think outside of the box, as well as reach out for new ideas. The creativity that comes from the heart doesn’t take much thought. Feelings and emotions are used within creating things to give them that passion. This gives thoughts and ideas a bit more meaning. When ideas are drawn from the mind or the heart--or wherever else they may come from-- it makes them personal. Creativity, as said before, is unique; what could be more unique than your own personal touches?
We know where creativity can come from, but what does it look like? Expressing unique creativity can come in all shapes and forms. When you look at anything that has been made-- a building, a painting, a film-- you can see someone used emotions and thoughts to create what they did. Ideas can create a variety of different mediums for expressing creativity. For example, a songwriter would come up with an idea for a new song by incorporating feelings and such into their work. This takes creativity because the songwriter must come up with unique ideas using these feelings to develop an original work. Creativity is used in everyday life, like architects creating beautiful buildings in their own image, or a book to movie where the director used their own imagination to create something based on their own unique interpretation.
Creativity isn’t necessarily something you have to be born with. Anyone has the capability to be creative, the real challenge is actually expressing it. Many people know at a young age that they are destined to create things as they grow, and they embrace it well. Others may have no desire to show this part of themselves, or they don’t know. Being creative is easy to learn in you are willing to. Though creativity can definitely be considered a talent, it is a skill that can also be taught similarly to many skills a person can learn in their lifetime. Creativity means using ideas in unique and personal ways as aforementioned, so all it takes is using a bit of imagination. Using imagination is a huge part of creativity. Imagination simply is creating things with your mind. The human mind is an endless sea of knowledge and ideas that are just waiting to be explored. Every human being has a brain, so imagination should be present as well. And if you have imagination, creativity is just around the corner.
So what is creativity? Just like the different forms of art that are created using imagination and emotion, creativity is a characteristic in many people which varies from person to person. Creativity is important to children and adults alike, and certainly plays a part in our world.
